If you're HIV+, don't take the risk travelling without travel insurance that will cover you for anything HIV related - you could be opening yourself up to large medical and/or repatriation bills!

If you have 'ordinary' travel insurance, should your HIV status be discovered, it is possible the entire policy could be made void or you would not be covered for anything that the insurers consider even remotely HIV related.

It's no longer necessary
to be on medication!

As you probably know, it's impossible to obtain life assurance that includes HIV cover from 'High Street' insurers.

For some time, we have been working with a very specialist insurer who can provide HIV inclusive life assurance. However, in the past, it was necessary to be on HIV medication. We have been putting the point across that someone in this situation should definitely be offered insurance.

Great news - now, you no longer have to be on medication to be considered for life assurance! So, if you've contacted us in the past to be told we couldn't help, now we can!

Is someone who is not HIV+
travelling with you?

Should you have to cancel, cut short or even extend your trip because you are ill for any reason, someone travelling with you may also wish to do likewise.

If your travelling companion has 'ordinary' travel insurance, their insurers will investigate their claim. 'Ordinary' insurance is not designed to cover someone if they are travelling with anyone who has a pre-existing medical condition. Obviously, HIV is. The insurers will check all this.

They may then refuse your companion's claim because they may also argue that, in their opinion, your illness was HIV related (even if you feel it wasn't) and that they don't pay any HIV-related claims.

Anyone travelling with you should therefore also be covered under this policy to be completely protected.

I just take out ordinary travel insurance - I'm concerned about confidentiality

As someone who has worked in the HIV sector for many years, I understand confidentiality.

If you take out 'ordinary' travel insurance and you needed to make a medical claim, the insurers would make enquiries about if you had any pre-existing medical conditions. It would come to light that you are HIV+. First, your claim may well be declined. Second, if that insurance company is owned by a larger one and is part of a group of companies, do you know whether your personal information will be shared within that group? How will that affect your application for other types of insurance? Maybe insuring with a standard insurer is not the best way to ensure the confidentiality you want to protect.

It's So Easy Travel Insurance is my own, privately-owned company. I have it in writing, following personal discussions with my underwriters and medical screening company, that your information will never be passed to another insurer. The only time it may be necessary to disclose your HIV status is if the emergency medical assistance service needs to check with me urgently that you are covered because you need medical attention. Their level of confidentiality is equally as high.

The letters that go out with your insurance documents are from It's So Easy Travel Insurance, not HIV Travel Insurance.
